Quickly, my H has been up for over 36 hours without sleep - a pretty nasty bout of abdominal issues
Now that the pain is better, he just can’t get to sleep. And it’s beginning to affect his mental health.
I can’t give him melatonin because I have been told by the pharmacist that it probably would not work… And sure enough it never really has worked with him, because she said the samething in melatonin is what is in your body to make you sleep and with the medication‘s that he is on, it makes sense that it would not help him.
She suggested Benadryl. Said it would not interact with any of his meds, and as long as I did not give the Benadryl to him any closer than 2 to 2 1/2 hours from his pain meds, it should be fine.
I’m headed to the pharmacy now to pick up the Benadryl. But I would so love to try something different. I think passionflower is a no go because of his meds as well. I was wondering about essential oils. Any of you know what essential oils might be helpful?

Did he have any luck last night finding sleep?
I have not tried oils, but I had success with sleep music. I have to search around to find what works for me. IE like the sounds of the oceans do not for me but others love them, etc.
So I have a few in my library of sleep music as well as sleep hypnosis.
I have also found great results listening to various church services. Some of them have very long musical sessions prior to the actual service. More than once I woke up the next day thinking "Hmmmmm....I never even heard the minister!" lol.
Lately it has been deep breathing techniques.
Hopefully the Benadryl did the trick for him.

Benadryl is a good option it is the drug in all the pm medications like Aleve PM.
The other option is some magnesium glycenate which is a supplement and can help with sleep and decrease muscle spasms, and cramps.
Good sleep hygiene is important too. Cool room, dark, white noise either from a phone app or a box fan. Make sure he is clean and comfortable and no screens 30 min before bed. Reading can be helpful to quiet and relax the mind.

My doctor gave me Melatonin which is a natural hormone we secrete when we want to fall asleep in the darkness. It doesn't work very much (at least for me)but in addition I put white sounds on near me, sounds of rain or of waves or music for meditation and it works after a while.
I hope you find the way to sleep. Sleep depravation has an influence on all your body and mood.

Oh my God!
I came home with Benadryl. It said he could have one to two tablets. Of course with him, more is better, and I am the opposite. But we decided he was in such a need that I gave him 2 tablets.
So I gave him the two tablets, and a few minutes later had to run pick up my son from work. When I got back, I checked in on him and he was OUT like a light. He was so sound asleep that I checked his breathing. He didn’t move a muscle until about 730 the next morning. Then he napped off and on all day.
I have never been so relieved in all of my life. He had been so pitiful… Was so very tired, but couldn’t get to sleep. Thank you for all of your helpful ideas. He is his own worst enemy as far as many of those ideas go. The TV in the room never turns off. Also, he does not like the deep sleep Reiki music that I use for myself and for my granddaughter when she’s having trouble going to sleep. He can’t read because he can’t hold the book. I may try some books on tape.
Anyway, I went to my first physical therapy post rotator cuff surgery today. I was a superstar and he thought my range of motion was really great. A little ice after the therapy, then back home. I made the mistake of lying down and falling to sleep. When I woke up, I felt like I’ve been hit by a truck on my right side. So tonight, I decided I really had to have a pain pill to get to sleep. But I haven’t had pain pills in years (Except for directly after surgery) due to being concerned about sleeping through his calls to me. We sleep in different rooms for various reasons. He has his phone and I have a monitor in the den. But I have been so afraid I would sleep through him calling for me. Anyway, tonight he told me because he has slept so much, he thinks he will probably be awake a good bit tonight. But that he made me promise to take a pain pill and said that he would call me and hollar at me if he really needed me.
He is so discouraged that he doesn’t much want to "work for it", i.e. turn off the TV, have the music white noise, etc. But I will tell you that I have never known anything to work so beautifully as that Benadryl. I wanted to go to the pharmacy the next day and get 10 boxes of it.
I hope he won’t have to use it very often, but I think mentally, it will be helpful just to know that there is something available that can help him out when he gets in such a mess about not being able to go to sleep.
I believe in MIRACLES!!! 😊

I am so glad that sleep found him!!!!
I am always amazed at the wide range of uses for Benadryl. I am glad it helped him. I know it kicks my butt. I only take half a dose when I need it.
I bet you just want to kick him when he is not willing to try different things to help him sleep (ie like the no TV, etc). I know what he means about not liking certain types of sleep music. I found some of them just plain annoyed me. I.E., like anything with the metal 'dong or ting' noises was not soothing to me. But others love those. He really needs to play around with the various options to see what works for him. He might like the sleep hypnosis because it is not musical. More of just a guy talking very monotone like about body relaxation, etc.

Finally at about 2 o’clock this morning I gave him one Benadryl to see if that could relax him enough for him to sleep. But he told me just a few minutes ago that he did not go to sleep last night. Now will be the effort to keep him up all day in hopes that he can get his days and nights straightened out.
🤞🏼

Best of luck with all this.
As far as books on tape, YouTube has Librivox recordings of classic books (like Jane Austen, Anne of Green Gables, etc) that you husband can listen to. They may bore him, but that's the point, right?
Also, my husband has an app that tells soothing bed time stories and plays background noise like city rain and others.
Definitely worth a try. Plus with the books, if he can't sleep, at least he'll have some classic literature to keep him company :).

Cannabis edibles, with a high cbd content. I am a very light sleeper with a really bad back. The stuff works.

Cannabis edibles… I’m assuming that’s the kind that would not be legal in my southern state?
I’m such a hater of all things drug and alcohol related due to my three sons’ addictions. But I would absolutely give him edibles if I thought I could get my hands on them.
He and I both tried CBD oil on a couple of different occasions, but we never felt any relief… For various body pains.

One thing that works for me is a podcast called "Sleep With Me." The guy basically talks for about 90 minutes and bores you to sleep. He gets more and more boring as each episode progresses. It might take a few times to get into it but it works great for me now.
